The Rotary Club of Glenferrie's WASH Project in Sierra Leone has received a huge tick from The Rotary Foundation with the approval of a District International Grant amounting to $8,000 in support of the project. The Rotary Foundation funding will cover the cost of one complete 'Ventilated Improved Pit' (VIP) Latrine, the first of two toilet blocks to be built at the school.
The toilet design is based upon plans used in Kenya by New Zealand based not-for-profit Beyond Water Global, who have provided considerable assistance in the development of the project plans. In the course of of project development, Beyond Water's design has been substantially modified, with detailed input from PP Don Moore, a Consulting Engineer, and from engineers at Njala University in Bo, Sierra Leone. What a great way to start off Rotary Maternal and Child Health Month, and the new Rotary year!

The club has so far raised over $18,000 to fund the project in Sierra Leone. Added to the Rotary Foundation grant is $7,300 from the sale of LightWalker walking sticks, $1,700 from a dedicated Bunnings BBQ, $800 from the paella evening organised by Geoff and Kay Widmer and $200 from a generous member of the club. Discussions are already underway with local builders who will work under the supervision of our project partners, the Rotary Club of Bo Sierra Leone, and the Aladura Primary School.
The project is being led by the International Service Committee of The Rotary Club of Glenferrie, led by International Service Director Amelia Anderson and Rotarian Isaiah Lahai.
