Speaker: Steve Crosling Topic: ShelterBox Australia - Emergency Disaster Relief
On 28 July, our club had the privilege of hosting Steve Crossling, an Official Ambassador for ShelterBox Australia, who delivered an insightful and moving presentation about the charity's disaster relief work around the world.
Steve began by introducing ShelterBox’s core mission: to ensure that no family is left without shelter after a disaster. He explained how the organisation responds to earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and conflicts by providing emergency shelter and essential survival items. To date, ShelterBox has supported over three million people across nearly 100 countries, tailoring each response to the specific needs of the affected community.

One of the key takeaways from Steve’s talk was the practical nature of the aid. He walked us through the contents of a typical ShelterBox response, which can include durable family tents, tarpaulins, shelter repair kits, water filtration systems, solar lights, and cooking utensils. In some situations, he noted, the charity also distributes cash vouchers, allowing displaced families to purchase what they need while simultaneously supporting local businesses.
Steve also highlighted ShelterBox’s strong partnership with Rotary International, which plays a vital role in funding, advocacy, and volunteer support. He emphasised that this collaboration has been instrumental in expanding the charity's reach and effectiveness over the years.
The speech was well received by all members present. Our club will host a sausage sizzle event at Bunnings Hawthorn on 12th September to raise fund to support ShelterBox and those who lost their homes in the war and disasters.
