President's Message

I hope members enjoyed their week off. We held a board meeting during the week at which directors presented comprehensive reports, we approved the presentation to members at a Special General Meeting of updated constitution and By-Laws (which you will be officially advised of in the coming weeks/months), some leave of absences were approved, a new member was approved for validation by members, and numerous other topics. (we also had a glass of wine and nice meal!).

Please check and volunteer for the bread run as Alex advises it is a bit short of numbers.
Look forward to seeing everyone next Tuesday April 23rd.

President Mark

Simon Messenger's 60th Drinks
Simon Messenger turns 60 on Tuesday 23rd April. To celebrate this event, he has kindly organised for every member of the club to receive a free drink on their arrival to the club meeting, on this Tuesday. Furthermore, Simon is bringing to the meeting his wife Nicole Gatto and daughter Ruby, to be a part of the celebrations. We look forward to celebrating Simon's birthday this coming Tuesday!
Rotary 9800 Conference 2024 - Gathering in the Goldfields
A posse of Glenferrie Rotarians, along with some partners, a total of 25, descended upon Bendigo for the “Gathering in the Goldfields”, as the Rotary 9800 Conference 2024 was designated. The merriment on Friday 12th April 2024 started with Mark Ellis hosting drinks in the refined cellar of the Ernest Hotel. While not all could attend, those who did enjoyed true fellowship over a nice drop of red. Before long, we found ourselves in the splendid historic townhall of Bendigo, which has been declared one of the finest in Australia, for the Welcome Event.

Toiletry Kits for Nganmarriyanga
Last week several members of the Community Service group spent a couple of hours packing 60 toiletry kits to send to Nganmarriyanga, an indigenous community 350 kms southwest of Darwin. The kits contain 8-10 items including facewasher, hand towel, toothbrush and Shampoo, to name but a few. The kits also contain an illustrated card, “Milpa’s Six Steps to Stop Germs” and are distributed by the school to families of 5–10-year-old children. Trachoma is apparently still present in Nganmarriyanga and it’s hoped that this initiative will go some way to preventing spread of this infective cause of eye disease.

Many thanks to Ian Dobson whose staff sewed the cotton bags and to Club members who enthusiastically sourced the various items and securing donations to the order of $800-900.
The packing session concluded with a few nibbles and a pleasant glass of wine.

Camp Getaway Working Bee - 9th August 2024
At its meeting during March the Board supported our Club's involvement in a work party at Camp Getaway, Axedale, 2 hours NW of Melbourne. The camp at Axedale was created as an initiative of the Rotary Club of Bendigo and has been gradually upgraded by Rotarians, within our District 9800, contributing thousands of voluntary hours. The camp accommodates up to 70 guests with modern facilities including three cabins, each accommodating four guests in two bedrooms, separated by a sitting room.
