Welcome back everyone to 2024. I hope members had a relaxing and enjoyable break. Don’t forget to catch your friends at the upcoming BBQ in the park on Jan 30. And of course our voluntary activities will start again in earnest shortly, not the least of which will be the Boroondara Farmers Market.
I myself have until a few days ago been in India on the www.rideforrotary.com For almost 3 weeks I have been motorcycling across India, dodging tuk tuks, meeting some great friends and visiting many Rotary clubs and projects. I will present at a club meeting at some time in the future but give you the attached link as a taste.
The Boroondara Farmers Market kicked off 2024 with a fine day, bringing out the crowds to shop for their fresh produce. The were plenty of canine visitors too, all of whom appeared to enjoy themselves, based on the number of wagging tails, catching up with their friends and neighbours after the summer break. Folk at the market were entertained with the soothing sounds of light music from the Felix Thiang Guitar Trio, a very pleasant accompaniment to coffee and donuts under the trees, a chance to catch up with friends, and do the shopping all the same place! Plenty of smiles around the LightWalker walking stick stall, with almost two dozen sticks walking out the door at last Saturday's market.
On Thursday 18th January, David Fallick, Paul Shekleton and Geoff Widmer met with RTN. Ananda and Nandini of the Rotary Club of Bengaluru, HSR, Karnataka, India at St Helen’s Café in Hawthorn.
Rotary Bengaluru was chartered on 15th January 2020 from The Rotary Club of Bangalore. It has about 50 members and the majority age is between 45 to 50 years old. Their focus is on child health and polio eradication related activities. They meet every Saturday morning at 7am for an hour of Rotary Business and then breakfast… right priorities!

Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network (RIMERN) is always short of wanted items like toasters, kettles, stick mixers, microwaves, vacuum cleaners and clean doonas and pillows, so this 10c refund collections drive will help to provide spending money for these essentials.
Isn’t it great that every 70 empties will buy a kettle or toaster, with the refunds adding up fast for other essentials as well.
So, please help out this most worthy cause by returning your empties and applying the refunds to RIMERN in easy steps. Rotary Glenferrie will look into potentially nominating some-one to be the “RIMERN Bottle-O”.
For more information, please see the note from Susie Cole, Chair RIMERN.
If you have any further queries, just please get in touch with David Fallick or Anita Morkans.
The Rotary Club of Glenferrie's Annual Christmas Cakes and Puddings Sale in late 2023 surpassed all expectations, marking a resounding success. The collaborative efforts of the Foundation Committee and the Farmer’s Market Committee resulted in the establishment of a charming stall at the Boroondara Farmer’s Market throughout November and December. The robust support from our community was evident, as our sales generated an impressive profit of approximately $1800.
In line with our commitment to service, 40% of the profits will be directed towards the Rotary Foundation, enabling us to contribute to meaningful global initiatives. The remaining portion will be allocated to the club, earmarked for community and international projects that align with our mission.
Read how your contributions to The Rotary Foundation are being put to work locally, in the January edition of the Rotary Foundation District 9800 Newsletter.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you do criticize them, you're a mile away, and you have their shoes.
I told my doctor that I broke my arm in two places – he told me to stop going to those places.
I was at the park wondering why this frisbee kept getting bigger… and then it hit me.
I have an inferiority complex, but it's not a very good one.
My husband and I laugh about how competitive we are. But I laugh more.
My wife told me to stop impersonating a flamingo. I had to put my foot down.
And then again...
I stayed up all night and tried to figure out where the sun was. Then it dawned on me.
And then again ....
Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls 000. He gasps, 'My friend is dead! What can I do?' The operator says, 'Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead.' There is a silence; then a gunshot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says, 'OK, now what?'
