President's Message

Welcome to our second Tuesday meeting of this month where we will have an inspiring presentation regarding the national youth science forum.

Members may be aware that Mark Ellis is again in Sumba with the eye program; what an incredibly generous, successful and efficient program, which we can all be proud of. Later in the year, Mark Ellis is putting together a night out to raise much needed funds for the program; more on that to come. Please check the roster opportunities as I know Alex was seeking volunteers for the bread run and also note the soon coming weekend working bee at Camp Getaway on 9-11 August.

See you Tuesday

President Mark
Club Meeting Report - 30th April - Khelina Fedorchuk
We were delighted to be spoken to by Khelina Fedorchuk and her work in Artificial Intelligence. Khelina has impressive credentials, studying mathematics for 5 years at the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics at Moscow University. The latter she secured an Assistant Teacher and then Senior Lecturer position. In 2017, she moved her work to study for a PHD at our Swinburne university where she was eventually offered a position of Postdoctoral Researcher, to create a suit friendly software based on her work.

It was interesting to hear her slant on Australian life as compared to her life in Russia.  Also, that she would have to leave Australia to continue her work, initially in Russia but hopefully in Europe in the future.

Beginning the Long Journey to Nganmarriyanga
The EndTrachoma project has been concluded with 60 toiletry kits being dispatched to Nganmarriyanga in the Northern Territory. Two weeks ago, members of the Community Group packed the toiletry kits into cotton bags that were provided by Ian Dobson. The kits were squeezed into postal boxes along with some small toys, and the total consignment weighed a shade under 80kg.

The kits will be distributed by the school to 5–10-year-old children with simple instructions about the importance of hygiene and its relevance to the transmission of the infectious eye disease, Trachoma. The generous donation and discounting of goods from a number of large retailers was gratifying.

Balwyn Centenary Grants 2024

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rotary in Australia in 2021 the Rotary Club of Balwyn donated a significant portion of its annual income generated from its Camberwell Sunday Market, to assist other Rotary Clubs in Australia in their humanitarian endeavors. The Sunday Market has enabled the RCB to start many major community projects and assist in philanthropic initiatives within Australia and internationally.

By providing Balwyn Centenary Grants to other Rotary Clubs is to give their members the opportunity to fulfill their dreams in making the world a better place. The RCB will commit approximately $1,000,000 over the next 5 years to aid other Rotary Clubs in Australia.

The first round for 2024 closed on March 31st - decision announced in May. The second round for 2024 closes on September 30th. The application form is found on this link CGApplicationForm
